BIRD TRAPPING

Trapping Pigeons is one of several ways to remove this pest species. This is predominantly an option where targeting the pest pigeon species from others may be difficult. 

POSSUM TRAPPING

Possums are protected in South Australia and all Pest Technicians are required to release  possums within 50 meters of the trapping location. 

As a consequence, possum trapping is commonly paired with prevention methods like shoring up access points. This means, when we release them within 50 meters of the trapping location the same evening, they don’t go straight back to their nest and cause continuing issues.

  • If access and space allows, we set up a bird trap on a flat roof space with seed and a water tray. 

    This approach takes several weeks, as the birds need to become accustomed to the trap being in their space. 

    This is done by initially leaving the trap doors open for the pigeons to come in and out without restriction, letting them become used to the trap. After 1-2 weeks of leaving seed in and around the trap, the doors are then closed with seed and water being left only inside the trap. We then return daily to release any native bird species and remove any of the pest bird species. 

    This is a very effective approach in removing pigeons from an area where other alternatives such as shooting and anesthesia may not be a viable option.

    A technician will need to come out and inspect the site for accessibility and suitability.

  • When one of our technicians comes to site, we inspect the outside of the roof space for markings near entry points and droppings for travel highways. We then enter the roof void to identify the access point internally and the location of their nest. 

    Access points and nesting locations are commonly in different locations. Once these aspects have been identified, we commonly set up 2 traps, this is in case a family unit is residing in the roof void. We come back every morning from then onwards until they are caught, upon which they are safely removed and secured until evening time when they are released into the area again.
